Respectful yarning has lessons for us all
Like a lot of whitefellas, I am on a lifelong learning journey. My friend, Uncle Mickey Kumatpi O’Brien, is a trusted guide on this journey.
As Mickey says in this must-watch episode of Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) Australia’s Insight program, “we come to understand the spirit of a place… and therefore we have a relationship with a place”. For much of my adult life, this place is ‘Tarntanya’, the place of the Red Kangaroo (also known as the Adelaide Plains).
Many perspectives are shared in this hour of compelling conversation. You certainly won’t agree with everything that’s said. However, you may want to celebrate this ‘yarning place’ that invites stories to be told and listened to in a spirit of respect; that very human place of understanding that our continent hears so deeply.
Make time to watch this program and, if you can, do so with the people close to you. Then, if you’re a non-Aboriginal person like me, get talking to people’s whose Country you might be lucky enough to get to know in a different way.
